The notion of Architecture

The general public is daily confronted with Architecture, although the big majority is hardly aware  of its existence. We live in a built environment, but in everyday life we take it for “granted”. As a tourist on the contrary, discovering a new environment, we open our mind to Architecture, in an active way or passive. We see a remarquable building, look at the façade, get in through the entrance, discover its inner spaces successively, become aware of so many things: the walls, ceilings, the materials, stepping around on the floor, the soundscape of each space, the light, the smells, the temperature, the humidity, the presence of other human beings, the touching of doors, taking a seat, leaning against a railing.

Of course one can appreciate architecture by using a medium, like a magazine, a book, a video, a television broadcasting, but nothing is as “complete” as the personal “live” experience of Architecture.

A client of an architect can become aware of many aspects of Architecture by an exchange with his architect. He learns by being involved in the création of Architecture.

To appreciate Architecture is one thing, to create Architecture is a totally different thing.

Even an architectural critic, who can analyse and describe Architecture in order to communicate his personal appreciation of an interesting architectural object/subject, got trained in order to apprehend the architectural “matter”.

Architects, among themselves, enliven and let evolve the notion of Architecture by their architectural production. This production does not consist exclusively of the construction of buildings; other ways of expression exist. Many architects acts in reaction to their contemporaries, although being inspired by the masters of the past.
